Unlock the Power of Journaling: 3 Simple Tips

Updated: Dec 12, 2024

I discovered the benefits of journaling in 2015 while going through a professional and personal defining moment. I needed a place to collect my thoughts and feelings healthily before communicating with others. Then, I used this tool to process my future, wants, and dreams. Ultimately, I sought clarity and comfort in the knowledge inside of me. The beautiful thing about this tool is that it is simple;

...you only need a blank page, a pen, and a sense of freedom!

Here are three tips that I have found helpful in my journaling journey:

Tip #1: Incorporate journaling into your morning routine to help with rumination or blocks

I recommend the Morning Pages technique described in Julia Cameron's book The Artist Way. This concept encourages unconscious long handwritten pages as soon as you wake up in the morning when you are in a state of almost awake half-sleep. I have found this method successful when used consistently during difficult times. Nowadays, I use it only when I feel blocked or when necessary. FYI: Morning Pages is time-consuming to fill in 3 pages 8"11" every morning, so allocate the appropriate time ~ 30 minutes.

Tip #2: Incorporate Gratitude Journaling

Gratitude is key to living a joyful life, so why not incorporate it into your daily routine at the bare minimum? The more grateful you are during the day, the less anxious and worried you will feel. Start by writing down three things you are thankful for every day. Please focus on the simple things in life because they will allow you to find awe and wonder around you. Thus, you will become more joyful.

Tip #3: Incorporate Affirmation Journaling

Writing affirmations every day is critical because it helps you rewire your brain by rewiring your belief systems. Emotions are attached to your belief system, and that's why these are so ingrained in you; if you want to improve and change your life, attaching a positive emotion to your daily affirmation will help you rewrite your belief system and become the person you are destined to be. Visualization is also crucial here. Daily affirmations only work if, deep down in your soul, you want that change.

*** Remember, our brain thinks in images and not words; this is why visualization is so crucial.

The first step in making change is to write down what you want in life.

I hope that this process will help you gain the clarity you seek.
